"Mass-merchandising
became possible in America only through the power of the machine.
In the United States, negative attitudes toward the use of
machinery were never so prevalent as in England. Wright, for
example, rebutted the anti-machine point-of-view in a famous
speech, titled "The Art and Craft of the Machine," presented
to the Chicago Arts and Crafts Society at Hull House in 1901.
In contrast to William Morris, who blamed machines for a loss
of creativity, Wright argued that they were an ideal means
of achieving creativity, when correctly used."
-- Frank Lloyd Wright's quote from
Mayer's book, In the Arts and Crafts Style.
